Functional Ceramic Sculpture w/Radial Design

Project Description:

Create a radial (circular) design on plate, bowl, and/or cylinder form/lid, or variation of using slab method and Sgraffito decoration.
Project Requirements:

Construct a simple slab form (cylinder container with lid or cylinder form without lid (plate, bowl, etc.)

Design an image that illustrates radial balance (mandala). Use template if desired.

Use sgraffito technique to scratch through underglaze to reveal white of clay.
Project Steps: Fill in blanks during project slideshow.

First you will need to brainstorm and sketch 3 different ideas – On back of this sheet.

Decide if you want it to look like a realistic scene/imagery or an abstract design/pattern.

Consider how it will fit on your clay form. Think in terms of lines, shapes, and balance.

After you sketch & get approval from teacher, construct your cylinder, bowl, or slab form.

Paint a contrasting color in a select area.

Trace your design onto the form.

Scratch through the shapes to reveal the clay body underneath.

Fire piece. Once fired you can touch up any lines/shapes.

Apply clear glaze and fire again.
