BEHIND THE CLAY

The ceramic sculptures I create focus on an invented yet familiar world within animal and human forms. I focus on the character(s) awkward body language to create a world that is both haunting and whimsical. Exaggerated features or textures create a playful darkness that embraces the friction between beauty and irregularities within the forms. The structures emphasize inner harmony and strength that is often obtained through struggle and loss.

The subtle gestures in the figures aim to capture the burrow that is found between the unknown and the obvious. Elements of greed, lust, rage, and cowardice are encompassed within these visual narratives. With each piece the viewer enters a new world where issues of solitude and confinement are challenged by issues of good versus evil.

I draw my images from a very personal world that plays inside my head like a movie. I challenge physical standards of human and animal forms by intertwining the illusive with the everyday. My internal work is meant to engage and intrigue viewers, offering symbols and situations that each viewer can interpret and reinterpret as they wish.
